NOVAPACK presents advances in sustainable packaging
At Eversia, we lead the development of new biodegradable polymer formulations for packaging solutions aimed at fresh products, dairy goods, and nuts. Our work focuses on ensuring that these materials maintain food quality and safety while moving towards more sustainable packaging, in line with the principles of the circular economy.
At Eversia, we have hosted the 2nd General Assembly of the NOVAPACK project, a meeting held at our new facilities in Lorquí and organized together with the National Technological Centre for the Canning and Food Industry (CTNC). The main objective of this meeting was to review the consortium’s progress in the development of sustainable packaging and to coordinate the next phases of the project.
The event brought together companies, technology centers, and universities from Spain, Portugal, Tunisia, and Egypt, all collaborating to drive new sustainable packaging solutions aimed at reducing the use of conventional plastics and minimizing food waste. The project is being developed within the framework of the PRIMA program, with the support of the CDTI and funding bodies from the other participating countries.

Key advances towards more sustainable packaging
During the assembly, preliminary results were shared from the main lines of research, all focused on improving the sustainability of food packaging:
1. Extraction of bioactive compounds from by-products
Advances were presented in the extraction of polyphenols, fibers, and pectins from agri-food by-products such as citrus fruits and pomegranate. These compounds enable the development of more biodegradable materials with functional properties suitable for sustainable packaging.
2. Development of antimicrobial and antioxidant extracts
Project partners are working on ingredients that can be incorporated into coatings and active packaging, designed to extend the shelf life of food and improve its safety, reducing waste and promoting a more efficient supply chain.
3. New materials for protective atmosphere packaging
Innovative materials are being evaluated for modified atmosphere packaging, with the aim of preserving the organoleptic and nutritional characteristics of products while improving the sustainability of the process.

Eversia’s contribution to sustainable packaging
