Present in the NOVAPACK project for the development of sustainable antimicrobial packaging
We have joined a major international consortium as part of the project "NEW ANTIMICROBIAL COATINGS AND PACKAGING IN THE MEDITERRANEAN (NOVAPACK)", an innovative initiative aimed at improving the shelf life and safety of Mediterranean products through the development of antimicrobial coatings and biodegradable, bio-based packaging.
This international project involves knowledge-generating institutions from Portugal, Egypt, Tunisia, and Spain, as well as one Portuguese and one Tunisian company.
A clear objective: reduce food waste and plastic use
The main goal of NOVAPACK is to reduce food waste and plastic usage through sustainable and cost-efficient solutions.
Within this framework, the project outlines several specific technical objectives, including:

Extraction and purification of bioactive compounds

Development of antimicrobial and antioxidant extracts

Identification of innovative packaging materials
Eversia’s role in the project
EVERSIA will focus on:

Developing new biodegradable coating formulations

Identifying alternative packaging for fresh products in modified atmosphere

Studying innovative technologies to preserve the nutritional and organoleptic properties of food
A project for the food, packaging, and sustainability sectors
NOVAPACK’s field of action includes the food industry and packaging sector, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and the use of advanced materials.
It is expected that the project will lead to the creation of active packaging with antimicrobial capabilities, significantly contributing to the reduction of food waste.
Backed by the PRIMA initiative and CDTI
NOVAPACK has been selected for funding by the executive structure of the PRIMA initiative, under Decision (EU) 2017/1324 of the European Parliament and Council, which governs the EU’s participation in the Partnership for Research and Innovation in the Mediterranean Area (PRIMA).
The project is funded by the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI) and has an approved total budget of €315,150.
This initiative brings together eight entities, including three companies and five knowledge-generating centers.
The project officially began in June 2024 and is expected to generate a significant impact on the sustainability of the Mediterranean agri-food sector.
