QUITINSECT showcases major advances in sustainable packaging at its 2nd General Assembly

Eversia hosted at its facilities the 2nd General Assembly of the QUITINSECT project, a strategic initiative aimed at developing more sustainable food packaging with enhanced functional properties thanks to chitin extracted from the insect Tenebrio molitor. During the meeting, the consortium partners (Eversia, TEBRIO and CETIM) reviewed the progress achieved and outlined the project’s next milestones.

QUITINSECT aims to optimize chitin extraction and conversion techniques to obtain high value-added materials (such as chitosan, nanochitin and nanochitosan) applicable to coatings and polymer films used in food packaging. These biopolymers stand out for their barrier, antimicrobial, antioxidant, biodegradable and non-toxic properties, making them a real alternative to conventional materials.

During the Assembly, the R&D&I teams confirmed key advances in optimizing biotechnological processes to extract and bleach chitin, as well as in trials combining mechanical and chemical processes to obtain nanofibers and nanoparticles. Eversia, for its part, continues to lead the industrial application phase by defining the requirements these new materials must meet and conducting comparative trials through extrusion processes and film characterization.

This project, funded by MICIU/AEI and FEDER, is scheduled to run from 2024 to 2027 and represents a decisive step toward creating more responsible, efficient and circular packaging solutions, aligned with Eversia’s sustainability strategy.

On the occasion of this 2nd General Assembly, Eversia reaffirms its commitment to innovation in sustainable packaging, driving cutting-edge technologies that will shape the future of food packaging.
