We launch the Valeria project to drive innovation in sustainable packaging
The VALERIA project (Sustainable, Renewable and Efficient Future Food Packaging Based on Biomaterials), funded by CDTI, marks a renewal of our commitment to sustainability and innovation.
An initiative aimed at developing advanced and environmentally friendly packaging solutions — a key project for sustainability.
A project focused on replacing plastic
The objective of VALERIA is to replace conventional plastic packaging with bio-based, efficient and recyclable alternatives.
Specifically, it focuses on the comprehensive development of 100% bio-based food packaging from agroforestry sources — including the main container and its complementary elements (films, adhesives, coatings…).
The project will prioritize cellulose-based packaging (such as trays made of cellulose and paper), allowing for the complete substitution of current plastic materials.
Several strategic objectives have been established, including:
- The development of new bio-based coatings with advanced barrier properties against water, oil, and oxygen.
- The formulation of biodegradable adhesives to replace current polyurethanes used in food packaging.
- The creation of molded fiber packaging with enhanced strength and extended shelf life.
- The optimization of processes to reduce waste by 20% and lower the carbon footprint by at least 20%.
- The validation of these new packages for products requiring high conservation standards, such as meat and fish.

A collaborative effort with institutional support
The project involves 10 organizations, including:
Eversia, ENCE, Cromogenia Units, Moldes Centrovía, Salgot, CETIM, ITA, University of Zaragoza, IRTA, and ANFACO.
Additionally, it has been selected as part of the Misiones Empresa Program and has received €411,527 in funding from the Centre for the Development of Industrial Technology (CDTI).

Eversia’s role in the project
Eversia will play a key role in VALERIA, leading crucial activities such as:
- The design of processes and scientific-technical requirements for new sustainable packaging solutions.
- The research and development of innovative components, including biopolymers and eco-friendly coatings.
- The application and testing of bio-coatings on new packaging prototypes.
A further step towards sustainability
Through this project, Eversia reinforces its mission to develop more sustainable, efficient, and circular packaging solutions, contributing to a future with less waste and lower environmental impact.
